The Banks of the Bièvre near Bicêtre Henri Rousseau (le Douanier)
Frame is included in the price.
Rousseau defined the subject of this painting in a handwritten note attached to its frame, dated 1909, when he put it up for sale with the dealer Ambroise Vollard. The scene depicts a landscape around Bicêtre, a working-class neighborhood south of Paris near the Bièvre River (which is now buried underground as it passes through the city). During Rousseau's time, the waterway was heavily polluted, but certain spots still offered charming views, such as the path bordered by a wooden house on the left, with stylized figures and the 17th-century aqueduct of Arcueil visible in the background. It is printed on premium glossy adhesive vinyl and framed as in the picture
